Independent Films Distribution werd in 1986 in België opgericht door Marc Punt en Jan Verheyen.
Sinds 2000 brengt Independent Films Nederland BV een grote verscheidenheid aan films uit op Nederlandse bodem. Met succesvolle titels als Gooische Vrouwen, Soof, Paddington, John Wick 3, The Hunger Games-reeks, Elle, La La Land en April, May en June is Independent Films uitgegroeid tot één van de grootste onafhankelijke filmdistributeurs van Nederland.
In 2014 is Independent Films een samenwerking aangegaan met Belga Films en sinds 2022 is Independent Films volledig in handen van Belga Films.
